How to add media in the Editor

The HTML Editor integrates with all Brightspace Learning Environment tools that have HTML content creation capabilities. For example, the HTML Editor is available when you edit discussion topics, create custom instructions for assignments,  and create content topics.

In this article, you will learn how to add media in the HTML Editor through the following activities:

You can add files to a (sub) module by using Upload Files or by using insert stuff in the editor. To do this, click in the desired (sub) module on Upload / Create and then on Create a File , instead of on Upload Files. The difference between the two is that you create a text page / web page with Create a File, where you link to the files in a running text. Via Upload Files the topic is not a text file, but directly the file that you upload. It therefore depends on how you want to display the file (s) and which way you can best use.

On the left side of the top bar in the editor you will see three icons of the insert options. From the left to the right, the options for adding different types of media are;

  1. Insert stuff: add an image, video or audio file or link to an external source, and weblectures video. Also, it is possible to add links or record a video with your webcam and add directly
  2. Insert image: add an image from your computer, from elsewhere in Brightspace or from the internet
  3. Insert quicklink: add a link to another component in your Brightspace course or to an external source

  • Do you only want to record audio?¬†You can record sound without connecting the webcam

First, click on Video Note in the Insert Stuff, then;

  1. Click on New Recording. When the camera is on, you see it on the screen. Stop the recording by clicking on End Recording

Adjust Settings

When adding a file, in some cases there is an option to adjust settings. This involves adding a link name, alternative text and determining the display size of the video or image. You have these options when adding a file from your computer (My Computer), from Brightspace (Course Offering Files) and sometimes when inserting a link (Insert Link)

How to adjust settings
  1. Link Text: this is the text that is in your message and that links to the external source
  2. Alternative Text: this is the text that will be displayed if your image cannot be displayed, for example because the internet connection is too slow. The alternative text is also important for the visually impaired. Place a short description of the image here. If the image contains no information, check This image is decorative. Note: you can only enter an alternative text when adding an image. When adding an image via Insert Link (so via the url of the image), you can add a link text in addition to the alternative text
  3. Lock aspect ratio: to keep the video / image settings with regard to size
  4. Width: specify how wide the video / image should be & Height: indicate how high the video / image should be

5.   Auto Start: check this option to play the video automatically. Note: you only get this option if you upload a video from your computer
6.   Click on Refresh Preview to view the changes
7.   Click on Insert
